Orchid Mangrove Safari

The intercoastal lagoons and mangrove lined waterways that connect Sikapakia and Bismuna are rich estuaries with abundant mangrove forests full of orchid species, iguanas, lizards, endless exotic birds and other animals such as tapir, ocelots and jaguars.

Explore the beautiful terrain North of Puerto Cabezas. This trip will take you past miles of deserted beach, through ancient mangrove forests, along rich estuaries, visiting amazing lagoons, staying in indigenous villages, enjoying meals with Miskito families, sleeping in traditional housing and experiencing the life on the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua.

To access this area we travel north from Puerto Cabezas in a private panga up to Sikapakia which is North of Sandy Bay. At Sikapakia we enter a twisting world of rivers that lead north to the Bismuna Lagoon, a UNESCO world heritage site.

Trips start at $700 and include:

  • Transport to and from Bismuna, passing through Sikapakia and the mangrove forests
  • Walking tour around the community of Bismuna
  • Accommodation in a traditional home staying with an indigenous Miskito family
  • Sleeping in a bed with a mosquito net
  • Amazing meals of fresh local foods
  • Purified Water
  • Life jackets
  • Waterproof submersible dry bag for your gear
  • Local guides and an English speaking medically trained tour director
  • Fishing, swimming and involvement in local activities

This trip is best with an overnight in Bismuna to spend time in the Bismuna village and lagoon and to also break up the boat travel from Puerto Cabezas. However this trip can also be done in one epic day.

A lower price trip can be arranged using shared transportation if you and your travel plans have flexibility. Please enquire for further details and availability.
