Village Trekking

The coastal villages in the vast roadless area North of Puerto Cabezas are all linked by a network of foot paths. Walk between these beautiful villages as the locals have done since the start of time.

The terrain is flat savannah dotted with forest and palmetto and the walking is easy. The paths wind through the area's extensive network of lagoons. Feel the wonderful breeze of the open savannah while walking on a lagoon edge. The mix of village and wilderness makes this an opportunity to walk through remote areas while spending the night in indigenous villages.

The communities of Dakura, Pahra and Sandy Bay form a loop where we can walk in-between the villages and spend a night in each. Each village is just a few hours walk from the other. Sandy Bay itself is made of 10 different communities, each with its own spiderweb of footpaths.

Here is one of our favorite village trekking adventures on the Moskito Coast. Refer to the village visits for more information on these locations.

  • Day 1: Puerto Cabezas to Dakura in a panga along the beach. Breakfast during the ride. We arrive in Dakura in the morning with plenty of time to explore the village, meet the townspeople, have lunch and walk to the lagoon for a swim. Overnight in Dakura in a private home with locally cooked meals provided.
  • Day 2: Walk from Dakura to Pahra along the footpaths crossing rivers on footbridges. Arrive in Pahra in the early afternoon and after getting settled explore the town, visit the lagoon or rest a hammock. Overnight in Pahra in a private home with locally cooked meals provided.
  • Day 3: Walk from Pahra to Sandy Bay along the savannah heading towards the coast enjoying the birds, wildlife and scenery. Arrive in Sandy Bay, settle into your accommodations in a private home and explore the extensive group of communities that make up Sandy Bay.
